Hong Kong International Open
Tim Slyfield Judo N.Z. High Grade development director,IJF Samoa international u 100kg champion goes to the H.K. International open today and fights on Saturday.Tim who at 36 will be surely the oldest judoka there will be fighting an assortment of Mongolians,Chinese,Russians etc will be fighting under the new IJF rules for the 1st time.Tim who is famous for his pistol grip and grip breaking using two hands will need to be careful as the bight eyed ,newly refreshed IJF referees will be on the ball for that style of judo. This is the start of Tims comeback judo career and the next Commonwealth games when Tim will be 38.Maybe he should start looking at the Masters.
Jordan has restarted his mixed martial judo club at the A.I.T. North Shore Campus with good numbers and more to come next week when school fully resumes.
He needs mats so we suggested the the Auckland Judo Ass which has a policy of letting the two professional clubs in Auckland use all its mats free release some of these.

Auckland Central Police Club, negotiations are a foot to form a police club in the police gym. Those involved are Craige [formally Tauranga judo club] senior Sargent,Cornell [cloggs]Senior police inspector, Auckland and Andy [gunso] Lovelock North shore and above area commander.
Should have a good chance of getting of the ground and then they can apply for judo mats from the Auckland judo ass who have given the areas assets to professional judo clubs free of charge.
One of the Professional club instructors offered to pay the A.J.A. 2 dollars per mat per year rental fee , now on a two hundred dollar mat , the equates a 1% return, thats good [for him]
Auckland has two professional judo clubs;
Howick judo club and Nippon judo school both these clubs are professional and get the use of the areas assets for free.
No wonder judo in Auckland is going nowhere.
The new area president has proposed a judo camp for kids , something which not happened since the area started spenting all its time and energies on a International Auckland open.
Kiyoshi and Yoshimi from Ritsumeikan uni spent their last judo night at Auckland uni before going swimming with the sharks at Wahi beach Coromandel with wayne schuler.
Kiyoshi Japanese sandan gave Jodan a lesson in breakfalls, something Jodan has not had since he left Ritsumeikan Uni.
The last randori saw 4 pairs on the mat , but was soon reduced to only one pair as all stopped to watch a fine display of left hand and both uchimata experts Japanese style judo between Kiyoshi and Yoshi.
Enjoyed by all with a group photo taken for judo history.
A strange sight was seen at the dojo during training last night,a fifth dan lounging on a chair drinking free beer Must be a bad habit he picked up at the national training camp recently in Wanganui. Hope we never see this again as we will have to have words to this national coach and also it gives the club a very bad image.
Can Am Ju Christchurch sent three good brown belts to Osaka for the monthly shiai hoping to get their shodans by beating three in a row, only one passed.
Now this says two things;
One is that its not that easy to get a black belt in Japan, and the other is that those who passed recently [three from uni] are feeling very proud of themselves.
Backlash.
It is rumored that Judo N.Z. accussed Matsuura Sensei from Daishin Dojo Osaka of helping N.Z.judoka to bypass the gradings in N.Z.
What the hell are they talking about?
Look at he judo calendar and you wont find much!
Isn't going to Japan, training and entering shiai what Judo n.z. should be promoting?
We at Auckland Uni Judo have a policy of sending and sponsoring our members to Japan to sit their black belts and this includes the famous red and whites where win 5 in a row and get instant promotion.Bring it on!
Igor
Welcome to Igor from Russia, with four other Russians in the club we must seriously consider making Russian an official language at club.We can all say nyet and da so far.

No doubt NZ judo has not moved forward in last 20 years. When a few clubs are trying to get young people into Judo some oldies want to stick to Masters .Come on it is time to move on .
ReplyDeleteMasters have the money, free time, and experience, they should be coddled[in cotton wool]
Deletemove on from what to what?the only part in the above article on masters was a mention about N.Z.'S current most successful judoka is at 36 is a master.a master in that a 36 year should not be winning successive N.Z.titles.this only reflects the level of N.Z. judo
ReplyDeleteThe Auckland judo development officer Rick should take responsibility for that. I cannot see what he has done to improve judo players. I cannot see any young judo players from uni coming through the national team .grow up
ReplyDeleteAuckland Uni judo club is leading the field in judo promotion, by having a active, very well patronized web site, regular classes and organizing team fights. With average age in the club being 50 young promising judoka like Tim Slyfield at 37 is trying to make his way into the national team. we wish him well.
DeleteOur DANTAISEN TEAM SHIAI WILL BE HELD ON THE 6TH OF APRIL , ALL YOUNG JUDOKA UNDER 60 YRS OLD ARE WELL.

dantaisen not quiet sure what it means in Afrikaans but in Japanese its means bring a team of 10 judoka and challenge uni judo and see how far you go.

Asian masters champion.
All you think about is uni judo ,rest of us care about nz judo 5 years from today. Tim Rob and the rest are jnz coaches and to challenge other young judo clubs is a shame. I hope its not coming from them. We respect them and learn from them

what took you so long? the think part i mean!
Thank you for supporting judokong!
ReplyDeleteSupport is always there for the national coaches with jnz interest ,not for people who only want to create problems within the judo family of nz. There are those that think about 2014 in Scotland and Rio in 2016 then there are those living in the past . Always talking about masters and how they are still better than the young ones callenging them to fight. Move on enjoy what the young judo players are trying to achieve. Support Tim and Rob. Judo nz is not only about uni judo
ReplyDeleteyour constant support for www.judokong.com is always welcome. a master from N.Z.just won the H.K.open
ReplyDeletemasters are fundamental to judo in nz and are deserving of support . the reason is that they usually form the sector of the population called 'peter pans' or 'michael jacksons' of judo - they refuse to retire and live in fantasy (trudging off to judo on winter nights when they could be doing a myriad of more productive things). having said that they are vital b/c of their enthusiasm, they generally are not afflicted with kiwi tall poppy (b/c they still believe they are contenders), and they bring with them judo etiquette + experience. these are vital to clubs bringing through kids who need culturing in the intangible elements of judo. in the event masters are not supported NZ judo will have a very small pool of "olympians" that will have to travel overseas continuously to ever find competition (provided they can get the necessary funding) - nz judo being much poorer for it. from my point of view these 'dreamweavers' are highly relevant in more words than i have so far taken to describe ... batalkapablaj majstroj! which means valiant masters in esperanto.
ReplyDeletewhat is evident is that auckland university judo club is the crucible of masters(elder) judo in new zealand going by this heated debate.
ReplyDeleteAuckland Central police just rang me to they have permission to start a MMA/judo club
ReplyDeleteBut l had to tell them that would be all too old unless they started/went into the masters.
rick
BTW "Y-chan", the police will also make a useful contribution to masters popularity as they have their own international police games.
ReplyDeleteHot gossip
Deleteit was announced at Uni judo last night that a Dantaisen team shiai would be held at Uni judo on the 6th April at 3pm.Teams are made up of 10 judoka of any grade or sex . Winner stays and in a draw both sit down.
