Rumours are flying this week around University Judo concerning the future of the club and whether the club will in-fact split from the Judo Federation and become focused on Mixed-Martial Arts and BJJ. What appears to be the case is that there is a strong move by the "youthful" members (sub-masters) to go in a new direction given the explosion in popularity of MMA and BJJ.
Quite simply, "MMA and BJJ is where the numbers are," says a young Uni Judo club member who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal from conservative, Masters faction of the club. "The other reason we want to in this direction is because the MMA and BJJ crowd has more hot chicks and more bourbon and cola" he said. "There's just not a lot going for Judo. I mean look at it from a young mans perspective. You turn up and get held down or thrown by several slightly overweight, middle-aged men who are well past their prime." "Then," he went on to say, "you have to watch these same men get held down by a pensioner. Where's the appeal? What we want is relevance and to not have our futures dictated by a cartel of craft-beer swilling gorillas."
At this stage none of the so-called "conservative" Masters party within Uni Judo were available to comment. It appears that they are remaining tight-lipped over the issue because the progressive, sub-masters were working to gain control of the legislative arm of the club. This higher-level waza, traditionally preferred by non-fighting dan-in-the-mail graded administrators, has proved formidable in the past. If the sub-masters can leverage their votes effectively then University Judo will be forced to accommodate their wishes, split from the Judo Federation and become a MMA and BJJ club. Watch this space! In the interim please feel free to enjoy this training video, supplied by the young sub-master quoted in this article. Please also note that the Monday/Wednesday beginners' class is temporarily on HOLD. New players and low-grades are to join in the 6-8pm class.Friday is still at 6-8pm and Saturday at 11.30 -1pm
VERY WELL SAID ,COMPLETELY AGREE WITH WHAT IS WRITTEN.
ReplyDeletePure Judo using IJF rules just isn't fun anymore; can't put your hand here, nope can't touch that, no sorry can't do those 2 attacks in that order, oh yeah you can hold there - but only for 3 seconds! Try explaining all that to a new Judo player looking for a relevant 'real' martial art.
