Judo Masters in Melbourne
Here’s another chance for the excitement of fighting in a masters judo tournament or showing off those kata skills. Six weeks is enough time to prepare, remember the matches are only 3 minutes under 50 years and 2 and a half minutes for over 50’s. You’ll probably only fight for a few minutes in the whole event. The risk of aggravating those old injuries is minimal in a few minutes against other older players. Plenty of your old friends are coming back to enjoy the excitement of competing again. At your age this could be your last chance!
Start stretching every day and doing plenty of uchi komi especially shadow uchi komi at home. Get some massages on those sore bits. You’ll need a little aerobic training but don’t over do it (you’re only going to fight for a few minutes). Careful who you train with, you’re much more likely to get hurt training for the event than in the event itself. Train with lightweight and middleweight kyu grades so you can get your throws going. If you just can’t do your favourite throw any more then resurrect one from the past that you can do and do lots of shadow uchi komi. You’ll surprise yourself.
If you’ve not long finished or still doing open competition and think that you’re too good for masters, get over it! There’s plenty of competition in the younger age groups and you’ll have fun in the master’s atmosphere. See if you can win the open. Recent Olympic medalists compete in masters events in Europe and Japan. If you started judo late then this is your chance to experience the adrenalin of competition without being out of your depth.
We all know what a great place to visit Melbourne is; good restaurants, beautiful old buildings, trams, excellent shopping especially for clothes. Take your partner and make a week end of it.
You’ve got a couple of weeks until entries close so make a start. The results won’t matter as much as the excitement of coming back. You need a little excitement in your life!
Regards,
Ken McAviney.
