Japan judo blog by Rick Littlewood in Japan for the Asian Judo Masters next week.

Left last Monday morning for Kyoto via Tokyo arriving at 12pm. Japan time which was 3am N.Z. time.A long day.

Rakunan high school judo club Kyoto run by Toyota Sensei had about 30 students on the mat doing judo in 31c of high humidity
Shota kun aged 13 who attack me like there was no tomorrow with seonage and kochigari makikomi.
Until 2/3 years ago at the age of 69/70 I could handle the best of the high school black belts, but not now, I just run out of steam.
Two/three years ago there was a good black belt by the name of Katagiri, Katagiri had a nice Japanese style uchimata which I had always stopped until  one day taking him a bit too easy I found myself slowing going over to a uchimata. ha!ha!It was great and no doubt Katagiri kun was happy too !
My wife oh ever so patient with me pushed me towards the local hair dresser so that l would look more respectable at judo not that I needed much pushing. For $25 you get a good hair cut, shoulder massage, shave, and hair shampoo. For the same thing in N.Z. $60 so its a bargain.
Went to a beautiful area called Takano with a fellow Kiwi who lives in Kyoto and showed him the area for the 1st time .

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple is located on a hill where people abandoned bodies in mass graves at times of war, epidemic and famine.
Located at the back of Arashiyama This area has 2/300 hundred years tea houses and homes with no telephone poles etc , so the whole area is very peaceful .

Suntory All Free Beer.?
the professional beer taster bought a can zero alcohol beer after looking a yutube video made by three living in Japan foreigners who gave their opinions on which of the four companies on the market tasted like real beer.
Result ?none but the above Suntory All Free was the closest.
Cost $1.50 for 350ml or the same price as a real beer in a bar or restaurant.
Tuesday , went to Kikumasamune sake company 350 years old Kobe for a visit and sake tasting. Most companies these produce all year round but traditionally the best sake is made in winter by a sake masters who was a farmer normally. This company is such one , only brews once per year. After many tastings it was still nice and smooth.
Once upon a time Jigoro Kano many years ago Sensei came from this Kobe sake company to learn Jujitsu.
While on tour we heard other people ask about the connection. well worth going.
to be continued.
