A freshly minted 1st Kyu last Monday, Professor Paul Wood competed in the North Wellington Open yesterday. Hungry for competition points, Paul managed to defeat four Shodans by Ippon. He competed in four categories and had nine fights. His results were: gold medals in the Young Masters under 90kg and Open, and silver medals in the Senior Men under 90kg and Open.
In the final for the Senior Men under 90kg Paul threw 3rd Dan Garry Davies for waza-ari before Garry was able to regroup and catch Paul with a seoi naga for Ippon. In the Senior Men Open final Paul fought Shodan Tim Brewer fresh back from training at the Kyoto Riot police. Tim managed to secure Osaekomi and forgetting the new rules, Paul managed to expend a lot of unnecessary energy moving Tim to the side of the mat before time ran out.
Key learning points for Paul from the competition included the value of keeping his opponents moving and breaking down their posture where appropriate, which resulted in Paul being able to play his game and his opponents never comfortably getting into their own rhythm. Further reinforced was also the classic Kong mantra of playing action-reaction judo.
Tim Slyfield is next on the list. Watch out tim.
