Just two weeks removed from the Auckland International Open, we have yet another busy competition weekend for University Members.
On the Saturday, at the same venue (Barfoot and Thompson Stadium), was the annual NZ Grappler Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi Nationals, which featured 2 members of University Judo (Ben Uy and Fern Qian) and an occasional member from our sister BJJ club AucklandBJJ, Jono Ridler. Ben and Jono managed to medal, winning a blue belt U100kg bronze and a white belt U76kg silver respectively.
Sunday featured some valuable competition experience for some of our less experienced members at the Howick Fun Day. We had 5 members competing in the cadet and senior divisions in the afternoon and 4 in the kids competition in the morning.
In the morning session, Kurumi managed to score a gold while Indiana managed to score a silver (pictures below).
In the cadets, we had Jaime and Phoebe, making their competition debuts and learning about the difference between shiai and randoori. A bit later, Sam and Anthony had their first taste of shiai alongside Jaekyu, one half of Team Kimchi, who was doing his 3rd shiai. Anthony had a tough couple of fights against more experienced competitors while Sam (a white belt who's only started this year) managed to score (though unfortunately not win) against a brown and a blue belt. The highlight of the afternoon was Jaekyu, who won a bronze via o-goshi against Anthony, earning a first medal for Team Kimchi.
Now we just need Steven to do the same (no pressure Steven).
