Friday's always been one of University's most relaxed sessions of the week.
Today's Friday session marked the official debut of Igor (our resident Brazilian Wolverine) as our regular Friday coach, having previously taken the occasional Friday or Saturday class.
The session started with some ne-waza, looking at a turtle turnover with an ude-garami grip. What was interesting about the technique was that it also happened to be a Doshisha University technique, as pointed out by David Mair, close friend of Sensei Rick and former regular sensei who was present at training tonight. While we didn't get a video of the technique, Dave happened to have an old school photograph of Sensei Kimura Mitsuro demonstrating the same technique on a young Rick (pictured below).
We also covered de-ashi-barai and how to use it in a combination with harai-tsurikomi-ashi before heading into randoori.
So I guess the message of this - even legends were students once.
